The issues over the past year or so about the Greensward in Overton Park has sparked much well-needed discussion and debate about public spaces where Memphians and others from all walks of life can gather and get to know each other, thereby making Memphis an even more friendly city than it is. One of the most successful of those types of spaces has been operating for 15 years now with great success – the Live at the Garden concert series at Memphis Botanic Gardens in Audubon Park.
Live at the Garden kicked off its inaugural concert on June 5, 2001, with Memphis’ own Stax Records icon and actor the late Isaac Hayes. Since then, it has hosted a wide variety of superstars and world-renowned bands such as Diana Ross, Huey Lewis, Al Green, Daryl Hall & John Oates, ZZ Top, Tony Bennett, Earth Wind & Fire, Goo Goo Dolls, Bonnie Raitt, The Moody Blues, and many others.
Live at the Garden, though, is much more than just a concert series. It’s a family- friendly, communal experience where thousands of people gather to picnic, socialize, dine and drink under the stars, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Memphis Botanic Garden with its beautiful 96 acres of nature’s finest and 26 specialty gardens.
While Live at the Garden does offering catering and sells cocktails, many people have made it a tradition to create their own special dining experience by bringing their own favorite food and beverages. From simple packed up snacks to elaborate meals with white tablecloths and candles, dining at Live at the Garden has become almost as much a tradition as the concerts themselves.
